about

I reached a stage in my life a couple of years ago where I struggled to function in the industry I had found myself in and dedicated my life to for 20 years. The music industry was a rollercoaster ride with no safety
harnesses particularly in the early 90s when I started my professional
career. Judgement, disempowerment, objectification, predatory behaviours and a distinct lack of resources and mentors for young women like me at that time left me bewildered, isolated and confused.
Through the pressures of career and warped ways of seeing myself
I developed low self-esteem and I found myself stepping away from the music industry altogether in 2015. I realised that I was just in need of love and support after working in an industry that had left me bruised and longing for real connection. It's a universal theme, life challenges, overcoming adversity and rebirth and rising from
the ashes to be stronger, bolder, unafraid and more determined. I
think that is where I am now and moving back to Tasmania has given me that reconnection to family that I was longing for. It's also the island itself, my spiritual home. Closer To The Truth, a wisdom, insight, a
knowing, an understanding of how to show support, to listen, to embrace the past and to reconcile and celebrate the love of family and friendship. The people and the place (Tasmania) got me back doing what I love MUSIC! The song speaks of the importance of having just one person who loves and believes in you to help you up off the canvas. It is also a song for my supporters family and friends and people who have followed my music for 25 years to say that I'll be there for them too so I will keep writing songs to honour that. Given the recent events with COVID 19 I think Closer To The Truth is a song that can really help people to feel better and to heal as it is a difficult time for so many.

Closer To The Truth - lyrics
Words and music by Monique Brumby
Guess I never really had a doubt you’d be there
When my world was crashing down, tales of despair
You saw the writing on the wall
When I couldn’t get out of bed
I drag myself down the hall You’d hold me there
I was nowhere
You were somewhere
Closer than I’ve ever been to the truth I needed you
Sometimes you give all you can
You leave nothing for yourself
And it’s hard to comprehend the injustice in this world
I was nowhere
You were somewhere
Closer than I’ve ever been to the truth
And in the landslide of my life
You were right there when I needed you
We all get sad but I’m glad you call
‘cause you’ve been there for me through it all, through it all
You’d take me dancing on the town
And some days you’d spin me right around
‘cause I was nowhere
You were somewhere
Closer than I’ve ever been to the truth
And in the landslide of my life
You were right there when I needed you
We all get sad but I’m here to call
‘cause I’ll be there for you through it all
Yeah, through it all
